Omnipod 5 Pods: How to Tell Dexcom vs Libre Versions
We buy sealed diabetic supplies for cash. We do not sell supplies.
Omnipod 5 pods come in versions that work with different sensors, and the box tells you which one you have. Look at the sensor logos on the box and on the pod tray lid. Pods made for Dexcom sensors won't work with FreeStyle Libre sensors.

This page is general information, not medical or legal advice. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist about your own care.
So if you switched sensors, some of your pods may not fit your new setup. Here's how to sort them without opening a box.
What Omnipod 5 pods are there?
Insulet lists several Omnipod 5 pod versions, each tied to certain sensors. They have included:
- Pods that work with Dexcom G6 and Dexcom G7
- Pods that work with Dexcom G6 and FreeStyle Libre 2 Plus
- Newer pods that work with FreeStyle Libre 2 Plus and Libre 3 Plus
Insulet says pods made for Dexcom G6 and G7 don't work with FreeStyle Libre sensors. That's the main mix-up people run into after a switch.
Your pharmacy may also send a newer version than your last order. If your sensor didn't change, check with Insulet before you assume the new box is wrong.
Where do you look on the box?
You don't need to open anything. Check these three spots:
- The box corner. Insulet says the sensor logos appear in the upper right corner of the pod box.
- The tray lid. The same logos are printed on the pod tray lid.
- The R1 mark. Pods that support Libre 3 Plus show the Libre 3 Plus logo and a black dot with "R1" on the tray lid and box label.
While you're there, read the label. It has the REF, LOT and use-by date. Our guide on finding the REF, LOT and expiration date shows where each one sits.
Do DASH pods work with Omnipod 5?
No. Insulet says the Omnipod 5 system works only with pods made for Omnipod 5. DASH pods are a separate product for a separate system.
DASH pods are for the DASH system. If you moved from DASH to Omnipod 5, any DASH boxes you have left won't fit your new system.
DASH boxes and Omnipod 5 boxes can look alike on a shelf. Read the product name on the front before you pack a bag or plan a pod change.
| What's on the box | What it means |
|---|---|
| Omnipod 5 + Dexcom logos | Works with the Dexcom sensors shown |
| Omnipod 5 + Libre 2 Plus logo | Works with Libre 2 Plus |
| Omnipod 5 + Libre 3 Plus logo + "R1" | Works with Libre 3 Plus |
| Omnipod DASH | DASH system only, not Omnipod 5 |
Why does the pod version matter?
For your care, the right pod has to match your sensor. If it doesn't, your system can't use the sensor's readings the way it should. Call Insulet or your doctor before you switch, and ask which pods you need.
For selling, buyers treat each version as its own product. Offers can differ by version. A clear photo of the box corner lets a buyer quote the right one the first time.
A real-life example
Say you moved from a Dexcom G7 to a FreeStyle Libre 3 Plus. Your new pods came with "R1" on the box. But four boxes of the older Dexcom pods are still in your closet.
Clear off a table and line all the boxes up in a row. Check the upper right corner of each one. Put the Dexcom boxes in one stack and the R1 boxes in another. Then check each date and write it down.
Now you know what you'll use and what's extra. You also avoid grabbing an old Dexcom pod on a busy morning.
If the extra boxes are sealed and in date, they can still help someone who uses Dexcom sensors. Don't toss them.
How should you store pods?
Insulet's safety guide says to store pods between 32°F and 86°F. Keep them in a cool, dry place, away from direct sun.
Simple habits help:
- Keep boxes flat and sealed until you need them.
- Never leave pods in a hot car.
- Keep them out of the bathroom, where it gets damp.
- Use the oldest dates first.
- Keep each version in its own stack.
Each pod is worn for up to 72 hours, so a box doesn't last long once you start using it. Extra boxes are where versions tend to get mixed up.
What photos help a buyer?
If you plan to ask for a quote on your pods, take three photos:
- The front of each box, with the upper right corner in view.
- A close-up of the label with the REF, LOT and date in focus.
- One group photo that shows your total count.
Keep every box sealed. Opened boxes and loose pods can't be sold to us. We also don't buy supplies paid for by Medicare or Medi-Cal. Our guide on how to sell Omnipod 5 and DASH pods walks through the rest of the steps.
Use daylight and hold the phone steady. Blurry labels slow things down. If the label has a glare, tilt the box a little and try again.
Not sure what you're looking at? Send the corner photo anyway. It's usually enough to tell which version you have.
