What Diabetic Supplies Can't Be Sold?
We buy sealed diabetic supplies for cash. We do not sell supplies.
Some diabetic supplies can't be sold to us. We don't buy expired, opened or damaged items, anything marked "NOT FOR RESALE," supplies paid for by Medicare or Medi-Cal, recalled sensors, or insulin. We also don't buy a few older products.
Selling? See everything we buy.
This page is general information, not medical or legal advice. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist about your own care.
Here's each type, why it's on the list and what you can do with it instead. Knowing this up front saves you time, and it keeps you from shipping boxes we can't pay for.
Why we only buy sealed, unexpired items
The rule comes down to safety. The FDA has warned people not to buy pre-owned test strips or strips not cleared for sale in the U.S. Wrong results can lead someone to take too much or too little medicine.
So we only buy boxes that are sealed, unexpired and in good shape. If we can't be sure a box is safe, we won't buy it.
The same goes for CGM sensors and pump pods. A sealed box tells the next person the item inside hasn't been opened or handled. An opened box can't tell them that, no matter how careful you were.
Expired, opened or damaged boxes
We don't buy any of these:
- Expired items. Check the date next to the hourglass symbol.
- Opened boxes, even if the items inside look new
- Loose sensors, loose pods or single strips
- Boxes that are crushed, wet or torn
- Boxes with a cut, taped or broken seal
The hourglass symbol comes from the ISO 15223-1 label standard. Our guide on reading expiration dates shows where to look.
What if a box expires next month? We may still be able to quote it, but the offer will likely be lower. Boxes with more time left are worth more, so it pays to sell early.
What if you opened a box by mistake? Unfortunately, we still can't buy it. Keep it if you can use it, or ask your doctor's office what to do.
Medicare, Medi-Cal and NOT FOR RESALE
We don't buy supplies paid for by Medicare or Medi-Cal. Medicare Part B covers blood sugar test strips and may cover CGM sensors if you qualify. Medi-Cal is California's Medicaid program.
We also don't buy anything marked "NOT FOR RESALE." Covering the mark with a marker or sticker doesn't change that. Look on every side of the box, since the mark can be small.
Not sure who paid? Check your pharmacy receipt or ask your pharmacy. If you had Medicare or Medi-Cal when the box was filled, keep it out of the sale. The same goes for a loved one's supplies. Our Medicare supplies guide has more detail.
Recalled sensors
Some sensors are part of a recall or correction. In November 2025, Abbott announced a correction for some Libre 3 and 3 Plus sensors that could read falsely low.
You can check a Libre sensor's serial number at FreeStyleCheck.com. Abbott says affected sensors shouldn't be used, so don't try to sell them. Contact Abbott instead.
Check every Libre 3 and 3 Plus box, not just one. Boxes from the same pharmacy fill can still have different serial numbers.
Insulin and older products
We don't buy insulin or any other medicine. We also don't buy these products:
| Product | Do we buy it? |
|---|---|
| Insulin | No |
| Dexcom G6 sensors | No |
| Dexcom G5 | No |
| FreeStyle Libre 14-day | No |
| Guardian 4 sensors | No |
| OneTouch Verio strips | No |
| Sealed, never-started G6 transmitters | Yes |
| Sealed, never-set-up G6 receivers | Yes |
That doesn't mean those products are bad. It just means we can't buy them. If you're not sure where your product fits, send a photo and ask. We'll give you a plain yes or no. See what we buy for the full list of what we do take.
If your supplies can't be sold
You still have options. Here's what to do with each type:
- Unopened medicine, including insulin: The FDA says the best option for unused medicine is a drug take-back location or a prepaid mail-back envelope. Take-back sites can be at a pharmacy or police station.
- Recalled sensors: Contact the maker. Abbott says it offers replacements for affected Libre sensors.
- Sealed items we don't buy: Ask a free clinic or your doctor's office whether they take them. Call first, since rules vary.
- Expired or opened items: Throw them away, and keep sharps out of the trash.
Used needles and lancets go in a sharps container. California offers a free mail-back sharps container.
Whether reselling some items is allowed under California pharmacy rules is a legal question we can't answer. If you're unsure, talk to an attorney.
A real-life example
Say you're clearing out a closet. You find six boxes of supplies.
Two are sealed G7 sensors with eight months left. Those can be sold, as long as Medicare or Medi-Cal didn't pay for them. You check your receipt, and your work plan paid. One is a sealed box of OneTouch Verio strips. We don't buy Verio, so you call a free clinic to see if they'll take it.
One box of Libre 3 Plus sensors comes back as affected at FreeStyleCheck.com. You contact Abbott about it. The last two are an opened box of pods and a box of strips that expired in March. Those go in the trash.
You send photos of the two G7 boxes and get a written quote. You accept, and you're paid for the two boxes that could be sold.
