How Long Are FreeStyle Libre Sensors Good For?
We buy sealed diabetic supplies for cash. We do not sell supplies.
It depends on what you mean by "good for." On your body, Abbott says a FreeStyle Libre 3 Plus sensor lasts up to 15 days, and a Libre 3 lasts up to 14 days. In the box, a sealed sensor is good until the expiration date on its label, as long as it's stored right.

Here's how long each sensor lasts, what the date on the box means and how to store sensors so they stay good.
How long does each Libre last on your body?
| Sensor | Wear time | Ages |
|---|---|---|
| FreeStyle Libre 3 Plus | Up to 15 days | 2 and older |
| FreeStyle Libre 3 | Up to 14 days | See your insert |
Wear times come from Abbott's Libre 3 specifications. The Libre 3 Plus age range comes from Abbott's safety information. Your sensor's insert tells you its exact wear time.
Not sure which one you have? Our Libre 3 vs 3 Plus vs 2 Plus guide shows how to tell.
Do Libre sensors expire?
Yes. Every sensor box has an expiration date. Abbott says that date is the last day you can use the sensor, not just the last day to put it on.
So if a sensor would expire partway through wear, Abbott says to start a new one before that date. Our guide on reading expiration dates shows where to find it.
Can you use an expired Libre sensor?
Abbott says don't use the sensor if the kit contents have expired. Expired sensors also can't be sold. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist if you have questions about your own sensors.
How should you store Libre sensors?
Abbott gives clear storage rules for the Libre 3 Plus:
- Keep sensor kits between 36°F and 82°F.
- If your home may get hotter than 82°F, refrigerate the kit.
- Don't freeze it.
- Don't store it in a parked car on a hot day.
- Keep humidity between 10% and 90%, non-condensing.
Abbott says storing outside the range may cause inaccurate readings. That matters in Inland Empire summers. A box left in a hot garage in Redlands or Moreno Valley may not read right.
See our guide on storing supplies before selling for more tips.
What makes a Libre box sellable?
- The box is sealed, with no tears or tape.
- The date is still ahead.
- The box isn't crushed, wet or faded.
- Nothing says "NOT FOR RESALE."
We buy sealed, unexpired FreeStyle Libre 3 Plus, Libre 3 and Libre 2 Plus sensors. We don't buy the Libre 14-day. See how to sell FreeStyle Libre sensors.
How do you check how much time is left?
- Find the date next to the hourglass symbol on the box.
- Count the months from today to that date.
- Remember the sensor must finish its full wear before the date.
- Use or sell the shortest-dated boxes first.
For a Libre 3 Plus, that means you need at least 15 days left to get a full wear. In practice, buyers look for months of dating, not days. Boxes with plenty of time left are easier to sell.
What about the Libre 2 Plus?
The FreeStyle Libre 2 Plus is another current sensor. Abbott says the Libre 2 Plus expiration date also marks the last day you can use the sensor. Check your insert for its wear time.
What mistakes shorten a sensor's life?
- Leaving boxes in a hot car while you run errands
- Storing them in a garage or attic
- Freezing them by putting them too close to the back of the fridge
- Opening the package before you're ready to apply it
We never buy expired items, opened boxes, insulin, anything marked "NOT FOR RESALE," or OneTouch Verio, Dexcom G5, FreeStyle Libre 14-day and Guardian 4. We also don't buy supplies paid for by Medicare or Medi-Cal. See what diabetic supplies can't be sold.

A real-life example
Say you switched from the Libre 3 to the Libre 3 Plus. You have three sealed Libre 3 boxes left, kept in a cool hall closet. Two have nine months left and one has four.
You send photos of each label and date. You get a written quote for all three and sell them before the short one gets close to its date.
